Puerto Montt

Today, Wed Feb 17th, we arrived in Puerto Montt, after 2 days at sea. The trip down had a few "rock & roll" moments with some rough seas. Hope this is not a sign of what's to come around Cape Horn?

We went ashore via tenders and negotiated a 2 hour trip with Juan, a local tour guide, to visit two towns, Frutillar and Puerto Varas. Both towns are on Lago Llanquihue, a tourist resort area. The area was first settled by Germans around 1880 and has a very strong German influence in the architecture and cuisine (we tasted Kruchen cake). Juan was an excellent guide and gave us a fantastic 4 hour tour.

Juan was a very nice guy who took us in his van. He was very knowledgeable and gave us lots on information on the history of the area and Chile.

Fruitillar was very German looking

The Kruchen cake was very delicious.

This volcano erupted recently and spewed ash 17 km into the atmosphere.  Fortunately the winds took it all to the East, towards Argentina.

Our ship anchored in the harbour
